Belief Notes and Ideas

A collection of belief quotes can help you cope with chronic pain and health challenges. Words and images in your mind can either help or aggravate how your body feels. If you pay attention to the continual flow of thoughts you think and verbalize throughout the day, you can often find a pattern. Even though you may have always considered yourself to be a positive person, a new habit of negative thoughts may surprise you. When your body is hurting constantly, it's easy for negative or non-productive thoughts to creep in.

Why? . . . Simply because your body is overwhelmed with pain signals and your positive-thinking guard is down. Essentially, your brain can become conditioned and re-wired with negative thoughts by laying down new neural pathways.

But don't worry. By becoming aware of your thoughts and beliefs, you can always lay down new tracks.

One of the easiest ways to begin monitoring your thoughts is set the alarm on your cell phone. When the alarm sounds, stop for a moment and become aware of what you are thinking and saying to yourself.

Maybe even write down the thoughts you are thinking at that moment. After taking note of your thoughts from repeated alarm reminders, it’s easy to become aware of some of your patterns.

Another helpful exercise to learn what kind of thoughts you may be thinking is to list all of your beliefs around pain, illness, and health. When you hurt and feel lousy, you may find that you are thinking and even saying to others:

  • I hurt.
  • I don’t want to hurt any more.
  • This pain is killing me.
  • I hate being sick.
  • I always get sick.
  • This disease runs in my family.

Also, make a list of comments and statements that your parents and family members made around health. Then try to flip or re-phrase the belief statement. For instance:

  • I may hurt now, but it’s just temporary.
  • I am feeling better and better everyday.
  • This pain is just a flare – this too shall pass.
  • My body is just letting me know to take better care of myself.
  • Everyone gets sick. This is just temporary. - Or - My body is healing every day.
  • Just because it runs in my family doesn’t mean that it’s true for me. I am the exception.

Once you have flipped your belief statement, set your cell phone alarm again. Every time your alarm sounds, take a moment to read the positive statements to yourself.

It may feel like you are lying to yourself at first because when you hurt – you hurt. But over time, re-phrasing your thoughts will help your brain to believe the positive statements and reduce the overall pain levels.

There are many books, cd’s and programs available to help you re-program new healthy thoughts. Some of the most popular books about positive health belief statements are from Louise Hay. One of her most well-known books is called, “You Can Heal Your Life.” She provides great examples of negative statements and flipping them into positive statements.

May comfort be yours! Here's to you for challenging your possible limiting beliefs.
