In addition to immersing yourself in humor quotes, here are some inspirational ideas to help you keep yourself in some laughter.
- Build a collection of funny movie videos and dvds that can shift your focus and get you laughing.
- Exchange emails with friend containing jokes and funny cartoons. Save the jokes in a folder on your computer so when you need a laugh you can re-read them.
- Buy a book of humor quotes and other inspirational quotations and stories that are funny.
- Go to Stupidvideos.com to watch funny video clips on the internet.
- Watch the comedy channels on television.
- Get yourself out of the house and go to a movie theatre to see a funny movie.
- Read jokes online.
- Do a search on funny animal pictures. There are all kinds of crazy photos of animal that bring a giggle.
- Join a support group that has fun people that don’t take their health problems too seriously. The groups we liked the best were the ones where the group was free to engage each other in jokes and kidding around. Because of the good spirits of the group, you would never have known that these people were dealing with very serious issues and pain levels.
(Personal note: just like you, there have been many days when I have been in tears distraught with unrelenting pain. On pain group day, I would force myself to go the my pain support group. We have several jokesters in the group. A few moments of jokes and interaction would always leave me feeling better than earlier that day.
The jokes would help to release some of the muscle contraction caused by pain and shift my focus from what a rough day it had been. I would go home feeling like I could at least cope another day. On other pain group days, I was able to significantly lower the pain levels.)
- Find a dog park near your house and watch all of the funny dogs interact with each other. Sometimes places like Petsmart have a doggy day care. On bad pain days, we would go to Petsmart just to watch all of the silly little dogs.
(Personal note: On really bad days, I would have someone drive me to the nearby dog park. I would just sit on the grass and watch all of the dogs run, play, and chase each other. It usually made me laugh to see who the dog’s owner was. It’s true. Dog owners do look like their dogs.
I also got the biggest kick out of the guys and gals that were using their dogs to get picked up for a date. It was simply great people watching and mood boosting. The thing that helped the most in addition to the funny animals was when a dog I didn’t even know would run over to me; look at me like he knew how much I hurt and that I needed a friend. The dog would then sit in my lap. Very therapeutic. Some how the owners were very understanding. The owner would tell me how great their dog is. I could usually count on these dogs to lift my spirits on a day where it was hard to find humor.)
- If you use Tivo or a DVR, save the funny items from tv. We often replay various clips from Saturday Night Live, America’s Funniest Video, and comedians from Comedy Central.
May comfort be yours! Here's to you in feeling humor in your heart.
